A Return to Sensibility in Residential Architecture
An ode to home designs that prioritise what truly matters. This renovation case study challenges the notion that luxury is defined by size. Instead, we celebrate architecture that reflects the unique needs and desires of the client. Good design knows when to exercise self control and make sensible choices to work within the constraints of a particular site and budget.

- Billy

We live in a world where opulence is rubbed under our noses everyday. Social media has a growing hold on us and is changing the way we view the world. We can control the type of content that we wish to engage with and all of us planning a reno or construction project absorb ourselves into a world of dream-chasing. Before we know it, we are surrounded day in day out with glamourous images of luxury homes and finding the desire to live this way ourselves turning more into a need.

Certain design elements seem to have become must-haves in Architectural briefs. Examples of this are 5 bedrooms, 3 baths, large kitchen, butler’s pantry, multiple living spaces, pools, lock-up garages etc. Social media has seemed to teach us that this is the new norm and that we must have these elements for our home to be worthwhile of being loved. It is easy to lose our own identity along the way and gravitate towards the mob mentality when it comes to project specification and styling.

Rather than succumbing to the allure of excess, we advocate for attention to detail, quality craftsmanship, and personalised touches that elevate living spaces within budgetary and siting constraints.

In a world where bigger often equates to better, it takes courage to opt against this trend. Rising construction costs and living expenses underscore the need for architecture that balances beauty, practicality, and sensibility.

Responsible design should be the cornerstone of every project. Beyond environmental considerations, we should prioritise meeting functional needs without unnecessary excess or waste. Good design should maximise spatial efficiencies and deliver impactful solutions without the need for material extravagance or overcapitalisation. Projects should be approached with adaptability in mind, ensuring they reflect their unique surroundings and remain open to future modifications.

We should aim to deliver timeless outcomes, focused on the lived experience and founded in these core principals of good design.

‘Extrusion’ is a project close to our hearts - and is the refurbishment of Billy Dawson Architects owner and directors very own home.

Combining his passion for Mid-Century Modern Architecture and sensible design, this project exemplifies how clever renovations can yield significant impact with minimal outlay. The restrained and elegant treatment of the home, coupled with efficient spatial design, showcases our dedication to delivering practical yet pleasant living spaces cleverly squeezed into small packages.

A key feature of this project is the round concrete plunge pool, strategically placed to maximise functionality, while minimising the need for additional pool fencing or decking.

Billy hopes that his own home can demonstrate that exceptional results can be achieved even on tight budgets.
